“We Should Switch From the Political Enmity Regime to the Political Competition Regime,” Gurgen Arsenyan Says (Video)

February 29,2012 16:59

We have already informed that the congress of the United Labor Party (ULP) took place today, during which decision was made to participate in the upcoming election on a common list with the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP). The congress commenced at 1 pm, but Gagik Tsarukyan’s visit was planned at 2 pm. The first 5 issues, including forming the political council, rule-making council and others did not last long, after which, when they had to discuss the 6th issue – the participation of the ULP in the National Assembly election – party leader Gurgen Arsenyan informed that before the honorable guest (he meant PAP delegation, headed by Gagik Tsarukyan) would come, he would have presented some observations on the internal politics.

That way of killing time was welcomed by the members of the ULP. Mr. Arsenyan talked about the situation that was created after 2008, when the political enmity regime was in force. According to the ULP leader, he will try to help switch from the political enmity regime to the political competition regime as much as he can, “The political enmity regime doesn’t provide for anything else, but destroying the other. From spring through October 2011, we ourselves took steps, regardless of how substantial they were, to change the atmosphere.” According to G. Arsenyan, the atmosphere was changed particularly thanks to the fact, that “people who were imprisoned for their political activities have been released. An amnesty was declared. As a result we are approaching the general election in a less intense atmosphere. We must consider the election as a mechanism of forming the government by the people and not as a beginning of military actions.” Gurgen Arsenyan also talked about emigration, party ideologies and that the number of parties for a small country like ours was too large and called on all conservative parties to unite, for example, around conservative PAP, those who supported socialist ideas to unite around the famous party that endorsed the socialist ideology etc. Mr. Arsenyan proposed these unifications, in order that the votes of those who supported certain ideologies did not disappear. He explained the union of the ULP and the PAP regarding the National Assembly election by that.

Before it was 2 pm, i.e. before the PAP members arrived, Gurgen Arsenyan had managed to talk about the Arab Spring, events in Egypt, the rise of Islamist forces etc. Fortunately, the PAP delegation was not late.
