Label of an “inadequate”

February 26,2016 10:55

In recent days, the characterization of an “inadequate” often sounds pertaining to Gaspari’s case. This phrase borrowed from Latin is used in a negative mode by those who believe that they have treated the civic activist strictly in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the law, or believe that Gaspar is telling a lie that the criminal elements assaulted him in the prison cell. The logic is as follows: since according to the authors of this view Gaspari has mental problems, lies down here and there and yells, consequently, he concocts the violence used against him.

I am sure that he tells the truth about the violence against him in his prison cell. Gaspari’s “problem” is that if he wants to live by the law of Armenia statehood both in freedom and in the custody, and does not cope with the “de facto” created situation. Such a behavior in the prison cell is more dangerous. And what had happened to Gaspar once again proves that the criminal elements are not only or even not so much the prisoners as the “key-men” starting from common soldiers and ending with the “higher-ups”.

However, I would like to talk about another thing, about the label of an “inadequate” (in other words, inappropriate, not consistent). It is clear that the factor of subjective is great here. The outside signals can be consistent and adequate to the stereotypes shaped in my brain, they might also be inconsistent depending on what “music” sounds in my head. For example, I find that the majority of the deputies of the National Assembly of Armenia are not adequate to the place, which must be occupied by a representative of the supreme legislative body. But to say that these deputies are mentally sick, only a psychiatrist can take on such responsibility and only after taking serious and conscientious examination.

Lying down on the streets and in the courts is inconsistent with my understanding of a social behavior. But firstly, we must try to understand why Gaspari is doing this. He, apparently, takes into account our policemen’s “trick” to scuffle and then after a slight touch, “formulate” everything as an “assault on a police officer.” I think, Gaspari by lying down wants to keep out of such “touches”.

But, let’s assume Gaspari’s methods of fighting have no excuse. Who am I to make conclusions about one’s mental health based on it? Judge not, and you will not be judged.
