Air pollution exceeds safety limits in three Armenian cities

Sulphur dioxide in the air of three major Armenian cities – Gyumri in Shirak region, Vanadzor and Alaverdi in Lori region – exceeds the limits of air-quality standards, according to the data, released by Armenia’s National Statistical Service.

The data received from monitoring of the quality of the air basin held in November throughout the RA settlements, reveal that Sulphur dioxide exceeds the acceptable norm in Gyumri by 1.5 times, 1.2 times in Vanadzor and 2.2 times in Alaverdi.

In all remaining settlements, all the air pollutants – dust, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide as well as ground-level ozone have been within the accepted norms.

The service details that in November alone quality monitoring of the atmospheric air pollution of the republic was carried out by means of 16 observation stations, located throughout the country. In order to determine the content of pollutants 1,452 air samples and 1,528 passive air samples were taken from 213 observation stations.
In general, 31 772 and 12 680 air measurements were done through the automatic stations located respectively in Yerevan and Alaverdi.
