‘Not realistic to bring Turkey to UN International Court of Justice’: Vladimir Vardanyan

April 25,2017 18:39

“On the website of Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs they speak of the victims, “notorious events”, but mention there was not a deliberate intention to annihilate, pursuantly – the deed cannot be qualified as a genocide”: told the expert of international law Vladimir Vardanyan referring to the denying policy of Turkey towards Armenian Genocide.

“We also should perhaps focus on the issue that the intention to annihilate will induce doubts in no one”: he noticed. Vardanyan reported that during the last period, remarkable investigations have been conducted towards examining the legal layer of the Armenian Genocide, but the issue underlies in another field: “to appeal to the UN International Court of Justice or other authorities is problematic inasmuch as, pursuant to international law, one cannot punish a state but can make him accountable if the latter has given his agreement.”

As stated by the expert, the aforementioned does not mean that it is impossible to lodge a separate appeal with other international authorities but Turkey should agree as well, which is not realistic at the moment.
