National Cultural Forum of Moldova: developing sustainable, creative cities

May 03,2017 20:03

The EU-EaP Culture Programme 2015-2018 is organising the National Cultural Forum of Moldova, entitled “Creative and Sustainable Cities: The role of culture and creativity in urban development”, on 4-5 May in Chisinau. Professionals from the cultural sector, experts and local authorities will overview and assess the concept of “creative cities” and ways of implementing this in Moldova, as well as analysing and testing potential for integrated urban development.

The concept of “creative cities” has become popular among policy-makers and practitioners who are concerned with the future of the cities. Creativity, creative industries and cultural resources are seen as a remedy for urban development in the post-socialist economy.

Participants in the National Cultural Forum of Moldova will learn best practices from counterparts from Slovakia, Estonia, Ukraine and other countries on how to turn industrial cities into European culture capitals and learn about supporting creative entrepreneurship in small and medium-sized towns.

Local case studies from Moldova will also be presented, including the “Implementing Creative Towns and Regions Initiative, example of Orhei”, “Creative Spaces Development and Creative Industry Roadmap” and “Reanimation and adaptive reuse of urban heritage, example of the Circus of Chisinau”.

Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and local municipalities will also participate in a discussion on developing creative towns, organised by the EU-funded Eastern Partnership Culture and Creativity Programme.

A closed workshop will be organised by the Creative Towns and Regions Initiative for experts from the Eastern Partner countries. The workshop will be attended by representatives of Mtskheta-Mtianeti (Georgia), Orhei (Moldova), Sisian (Armenia), Svetlogorsk (Belarus), Shamkir (Azerbaijan) and Kosiv (Ukraine).
