“It should not be so as the whole burden of the foreign policy and procedure of the conflict falls on the shoulders of the soldier defending the borderline, and the negotiating party, in this case – Armenia, to waste years on agreeing or not on per detail and the objectives and means to turn into an end in itself. It is not clear upon what Armenian side has been negotiating with Azerbaijan for more than 20 years. Even if investigation mechanisms are applied they will not have any essential effect on the core settlement. Merely the propagandistic rhetorics will increase in Armenia and the accusations towards Azerbaijan, especially when it has always been clear which side primarily violates the ceasefire. Meanwhile this region day before needs peace and development”, told Gevorg Melikyan, the Associate Expert of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs.
We asked him whether much activeness can be expected from Trump’s administration particularly in NKR peaceful settlement procedure, or Washington agrees to leave the initiator’s “wheel” to Moscow in the settlement procedure. “The wheel is anyways in Moscow’s hands, to whom the Armenian side has willingly given it with subjective and objective reasons, on which the West has silently agreed. Armenia should wish and again take the wheel in its hands and act as a sovereign and ambitious state. To reach this, a set of complex actions are needed in the most fundamental fields, starting from education to military and foreign policy, as well as the change of the incumbent political elite to be able to radically undertake new approaches and bring forth new conceptions of strategic meaning”, he replied.
