‘Turkey loses positions in region’: Ruben Safrastyan

Orientist, Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan informs that currently weakening of the strategic role and significance of Turkey is noticed. “The foreign policy of Turkey loses its dynamics. This is important and conditioned by mistakes of a strategic significance which Erdogan made”, he told.

The expert noted that from one angle Turkish-German relations are worsening, from the other angle, non-prudent policy in Syria contributes to the weakening of Turkey’s strategic positions: “The adventurousness of Turkey in Syria brought forth negative results. Engaging in the issue of expelling Assad, Turkey did not succeed. The opposite, Assad’s authority became stronger.”

Ruben Safrastyan stated that Turkey was trying to prevent the Kurdish movement, but the Kurdish factor in North of Syria becomes stronger and legitimate: “Let us add the referendum of Iraq’s Kurds planned for September to the mentioned. Turkey did not succeed in achieving the primary objective as regards the Kurdish issue.”

Ruben Safrastyan referred to the signing of the agreement on purchasing Russian C 400 missiles by Turkey lately, “It was an adventurousness to buy them from Russians. They do not need them but seeing that Turkey loses its significance to the US, Erdogan made such an adventurous step. The phase comes when even adventurousness does not work.”
