‘I am afraid aggravation of Russian-American relations to lead to Minsk Group function performance failure’, political scientist

Political scientist Aghasi Yenokyan is sure that there are no preconditions for the resumption of negotiations in the context of the meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers scheduled for September. “There are no significant changes that could have led to the resumption of the negotiation process”, he told to Aravot.am. Yenokyan believes that the deepening political and economic crisis in Azerbaijan will not have a significant impact on border incidents. “It has not reached a significant level yet. Similarly, in Armenia, the crisis has not reached a substantial level either”.

We asked whether how the tense relations between Russia and America will affect the OSCE Minsk Group works. “The Minsk Group seems to be able to combine it all, and still to be able to fulfill its role of a mediator, at least in terms of keeping the negotiations alive, which is very important. I am afraid that the aggravation of these relations will lead to Minsk Group’s function performance failure. At least, the Minsk Group failed to impose the arrangements of Vienna and St. Petersburg on Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s approach is as follows: if it takes any step, it agrees to the preservation of the “status quo”. If it does not make, then it does not agree. Avoiding such arrangements contains the constant threat of war”, said Aghasi Yenokyan.
