The European Sambo Championship was held on May 18-20 in Athens, Greece, with more than 300 athletes from 26 states. It is gratifying that the samboists representing Armenia once again confirmed the high level of Armenian sambo, winning 6 medals.
It is even more gratifying that one of our best athletes, Tigran Kirakosyan, from Vanadzor again performed brilliantly and once again was proclaimed Sambo Champion in the 52 kg weight category.
Arsen Ghazaryan, another athlete from Vanadzor, won the bronze medal in the 74 kg category. Grigor Mkhitaryan (52 kg, Gyumri), Mkhitar Mkhitaryan (57 kg, Spitak), Vachik Vardanyan (68 kg, Yeghvard), David Petrosyan (82 kg, Artsakh) also won bronze medals.
So, our team will return home with six medals: one golden, five bronze. Let us add that Tigran, Vachik and David are alumni of Sambo and Judo Olympic Children’s Sports School.
