Nikol Pashinyan on teaching about the Armenian people and history of the Armenian church in school: ‘Why can’t we have a class on Armenian state history?’

November 05,2019 18:11

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke about two important issues during his latest Facebook live video. The first was regarding the fact that discussions are being held in the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport to make Armenian church history a separate subject in school. According to the Prime Minister, he discussed this issue a few days ago with members of the Supreme Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

“Does this truly mean that the history of the Armenian people and the history of the Armenian church are separate from each other? There is a barrier, and the history of the Armenian people differs slightly from the history of the Armenian church,” Nikol Pashinyan said, and added, “Or, if we are going to separate the general history of the Armenian people from the history of Armenian institutions, then why don’t we have a class on the history of the Armenian military or the Armenian culture? This issue is a priority for us, and we received the vote of trust from the majority of Armenians. We envision Armenia as a nation for informational technology.”

He continued, “What does this have to do with what I was speaking about? When we look at statistics involving our educational system and what children go on to study, we think about how their future studies coincide with our political aspirations. We need to figure out what we are going to focus on the most in schools. And it is not possible to have a country with the best IT sector if we do not put an emphasis on mathematics, chemistry, physics, and geometry.”

“This is one part of the issue. The other part is the message that we are trying to convey by separating the history of the Armenian people from the Armenian church. Is the history of the Armenian people different from that of the Armenian church? This separation does not allow us to fully understand our people’s history. We also need to consider that the Soviet Union completely eliminated the history of the Armenian church from Armenian history classes. And we did not have much time to think about this after independence. Therefore, now is the right time to discuss this and to create our united history.”
