‘The EU turned on a green light for Armenia’: Political analyst on the visa-free regime

December 25,2019 19:34

“The European Union will give Armenia 150 million euros next year. This kind of financial support is very important for our country’s agenda and it will allow the government to implement its visions,” an expert from the Orbeli center and political analyst Narek Minasyan said during a meeting with reporters at the Armenpress agency while summarizing achievements in EU-Armenia relations over the past year.

According to him, the European side recorded the fact that Brussels does not see any issues in establishing a visa-free regime between the EU countries and Armenia on a high level. “The EU turned on a green light for Armenia, but in order to fully envision the process, we must emphasize that the issue is not solely dependent on the EU’s control. Every single country in the EU needs to agree to it. Some countries have already given a positive response to the establishment of a visa-free regime, and the Armenian side frequently raises the issue.”

According to Minasyan, Brussels has become more sensitive towards the issue of illegal immigration, but Armenia has emphasized that it should not suffer due to the actions of other countries. “The process should not be determined based on a negative experience with other countries, but instead based on the changes that are taking place in Armenia.”

Narek Minasyan added that two years have passed since the signing of the Armenia-EU Enhanced Partnership Agreement, and the achievements that have been made towards ratification are evident.
