Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan spoke to journalists about the recent developments in US-Iran relations. “We believe that the situation is beginning to deescalate, and we hope that the situation will calm down entirely over the next few days. Of course, we are also preparing for the situation to deteriorate.”
The Security Council secretary added that, overall, widespread activities have been carried out both during the Syrian and Iranian crises. “Our institutional abilities have widened. We have established an emergency evacuation plan and a plan for responding to a crisis, which are important steps for our government system. We know for sure what we will do. We frequently increase the stability of our government system.”
When asked if he considers it a possibility for Armenia to play the role of a mediator when taking into consideration its relations with Iran and the USA, Armen Grigoryan said, “We did not discuss this option, but we hope that the conflict will be resolved soon. We have been able to see our role in making sure that we continue mutual dialogue with both sides so that we can help ensure that the conflict will be resolved as soon as possible.”
Regarding Armenia’s economic security, and whether Armenia will have issues when the Russia-Turkey gas pipe is opened, Armen Grigoryan said, “We do not have any problems with economic stability at the moment. We have discussed all options ranging from food security to important infrastructural work. We have been able to establish all possible alternative routes and solutions. We also have been able to establish maps for how we will receive products and replacements if a crisis were to arise. We are prepared in all cases if no force majeure events take place. The economic growth we had in 2019 gave us confidence and we expect more developments to take place.”
