EU NEIGHBOURS. On 4 March, the EU launched a new agriculture project in Armenia. Titled the ‘EU Green Agriculture Initiative in Armenia’ (EU-GAIA), the project will support the development of sustainable, inclusive, innovative and market-based agribusiness.

The focus will be on the northern provinces of the country – Shirak, Lori and Tavush. The project has a budget of €11.7 million and will be implemented over the course of three years.

The project is funded by the EU (€9,7 million) with co-funding from the Austrian Development Agency (€2 million). Its governmental counterpart is the country’s Ministry of Economy. The project is partially implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Armenia.

According to the Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Andrea Wiktorin, the new project confirms the EU’s commitment to the rural sector in Armenia and is in line with its goal to contribute to inclusive growth in the northern regions of Armenia “through boosting green agriculture and enhancing local added value”.
