‘We will not stay silent’: Members of Voice of Artsakh Mothers initiative meet with head of EU delegation to Armenia Andrea Victorin

October 27,2020 19:31

Members of the Voice of Artsakh Mothers initiative Liana Adamyan, Eva Safaryan, and Siranooysh Sargsyan met with the head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Andrea Victorin. After their hour-long meeting with the ambassador, the women said that they had a “warm, personal, feminine, and diplomatic discussion.” The women presented their letter and demand to the ambassador, which they are also presenting to different embassies and international organizations in Armenia. The demand is the same: recognize Artsakh’s independence, support the end of the war by imposing sanctions, and establishing claims in the agendas of the appropriate organizations and headquarters.

The ambassador’s responses were diplomatic. The coordinators do not have any further expectations.

“We knew what the answers would be, but this was another opportunity to raise our voices. We will not remain silent,” Liana Adamyan told reporters, adding that they simply need to find methods of cooperation for future activities. Since the ambassador is German, the women from Artsakh tried to take the discussion in that direction, asking her to have an influence on her own country’s government to stop the supply of Turkish Bayraktar UAVs. Some of the pieces used in those UAVs are from Germany. They used Austria and Canada as examples of countries that stopped military-technical cooperation with Turkey, even if at a high price.”

They also discussed the possibility of providing humanitarian aid to the refugees from Artsakh currently in Armenia. According to the women from Artsakh, this aid needs to be sent directly to Artsakh. The ambassador said that they are willing to provide support, but those issues are currently being outlined through agreements made between Armenia and international organizations. It will be necessary for Armenia to make a statement in this case.

The members of the initiative will clarify their future activities depending on the responses to their letters and appeals. They will wait two more days to understand what they should do in the future. The women from Artsakh also said that they’ve only included a few people in the protests due to the coronavirus. Many people are sick and they cannot go. Others live outside of Yerevan and have difficulty participating.

“The frontlines will determine our agenda,” the women said.
