March 10,2022 23:03

European ministers of culture and media have expressed their support for Ukrainian artists, journalists and culture and media professionals, whose freedoms are now threatened due to Russia’s military aggression.

In a declaration, ministers meeting in Angers on 7-8 March under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union affirmed their ambition to support the reception of these groups under conditions that allow them to continue to carry out their professions, and thus preserve their freedom of expression and artistic creation.

Responding to the manipulation of information and misinformation campaigns, the ministers highlighted the essential importance of freedom of the press and media pluralism, which are pillars of functioning democracy.

Lastly, given the threats and serious damage to Ukraine’s museums, monuments and urban heritage, the ministers expressed their deep concern and their support for preserving this heritage in close cooperation with international organisations and relevant partners.

The meeting was addressed by video link by Oleksandr Tkachenko, Ukrainian Minister for Culture and Information Policy.
