EU NEIGHBOURS . In March this year, the European Union announced its intention to build a new EU TUMO Convergence Centre for Engineering and Applied Science in Armenian capital Yerevan. In June, the EU launched an international design competition for the design of the centre.

The center’s architecture will be one of its strategic assets. It will signal the project’s vision through a design concept that reflects a livable environment fostering open collaboration in the innovation ecosystem of the future.

67 firms from 24 countries submitted expressions of interest for stage I of the competition. The jury shortlisted three of those firms for stage II. Representatives of the three companies travelled to Yerevan in July this year to work with the jury and the Convergence Centre team during a two-day workshop that led to the selection of the winning firm.

As a result of stage II, a winner was selected to work on the design of the centre. According to the jury, the winning team demonstrated a deep understanding of the programme and vision of the project, as well as of the urban context in which the site is located.

The project has now entered its concept design phase. The ideas generated by the winning company during the competition are now being elaborated, leading to a final architectural design in spring 2020.

With an area of 25,000 square metres, the centre will become a vibrant community, fostering high-tech innovation and state-of-the-art education.
