‘It is not clear what meetings My Step has had in the European Parliament, but we have not had results in being able to have an impact on this resolution’

The head of the Bright Armenia parliamentary faction, Edmon Marukyan, considers the work of the parliament in parliamentary diplomacy to be unsatisfactory.

In an interview with Aravot Daily, Edmon Marukyan said that the European Parliament’s resolution was not strange, but he also said that the My Step faction’s visit did not cause any changes in the wording of the resolution.

The European Parliament had passed a resolution that supports the territorial integrity and the right to self-determination of its Eastern partners, as well as the avoidance of using any force or threats of force.

When asked how he would evaluate the resolution, Edmon Marukyan responded, “The European Parliament did not say anything new in this resolution, since they have not recognized the de facto or self-declared independence of states that are fighting. Therefore, they are continuing on the path of believing in territorial integrity, but the only positive thing for us is that they do not support the use or threat of force.”

Edmon Marukyan remembered how the authorities would be satisfied with how such a statement was included in a resolution during the Republican administration, as well as how they would claim that this was due to their efforts. Regarding the behavior of the current authorities, the deputy said, “The current authorities also do not believe that this is a poor resolution. I think that we need to move forward and not be satisfied just with the statement about using or threatening to use force since we need more than that. In this case, of course, we still have work to do.”

The Azeri media is considering the acceptance of this resolution to be in Azerbaijan’s favor. In fact, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a statement where it expresses the belief that this resolution is of a mandatory nature. According to the opposition in Armenia, the acceptance of this resolution and the situation surrounding it shows that the Armenian deputies are either uninformed or they do not use the proper tactics. Marukyan was asked whether or not he agreed with these claims. He spoke about how, after the recent European Parliament elections, the Armenian parliament did not visit. He expressed worry about how only the My Step deputies visited. “Ruben Rubinyan, Gayane Abrahamyan, and other My Step deputies visited the European Parliament, which I had criticized because it is not appropriate for a parliamentary delegation to be sent somewhere that does not include all the forces in parliament. It is not clear what meetings took place and what they did there, but this resolution was accepted after the visit. Therefore, it shows that this visit did not give us any results in being able to have an impact on the resolution.”

Edmon Marukyan said that the Bright Armenia political party wishes to visit the European Parliament, but they are facing financial difficulties.
