The Armenian government decided to extend the state of emergency until August 12th and call upon a special session of parliament in accordance with the law with the intention of preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia and State of Emergency Commandant Tigran Avinyan said that the risks that caused the state of emergency to be declared in the first place have not been neutralized. “The situation surrounding the pandemic is concerning, but, according to the healthcare system, it is manageable. It would be impossible to regulate the rules regarding sanitation without a state of emergency. The expectation is that we will not need to extend the state of emergency in the future.”

According to Avinyan, the government is considering the opportunity for making legislative amendments that are aimed towards protecting the public and sanitary security in emergency conditions. This will allow the government to carry out effective quarantine measures and some restrictions that will be sufficient in preventing the spread of the virus. “These regulations will be decided upon based on how the pandemic progresses.” The deputy prime minister also said that the healthcare system’s abilities are also continuously improving.
